Admittedly, it was a new approach to confronting your demons but it wasn't satisfying.

I wanted some begging an pleading. Maybe some tears from the perpetrator (that I can actually see).

I wanted to feel like there was accountability. The women of the film seemed to smart and too modern to just walk away after feeling tortured for over two decades to walk away with even the tiniest bit of forgiveness.

But, I can't relate. I have also confronted my own demons and have received an apology as well, but I don't know if I feel satisfied from my own case.

Hmmm...what was the purpose of the film?

I'll give it some credit for heading in the right direction though.

It's hard to watch films like this because cancer is such an ugly disease and it affects so many of our lives.

I am guessing that there are more people in this world that have been affected by cancer more than any other disease out there. I have been affected at least 3 times by people I have been very close to and it still feels so random and unfair.

Now that I am getting older I have started to think about death from a different perspective. There are possibly fewer years between today and death than today and birth. It has been roughly 40 years between birth and now and I'm not quite sure if I will live 40 more. I might potentially even be right in the middle of my life but I am really hoping that if I were to live that long that it would be a life of good health and energy. Currently, this is a big concern for me.

Dee Dee Ricks is around my age and this film hit me in a way that rarely hits me. Not too long ago, another acquaintance from high school started posting her fears after getting diagnosed with Breast Cancer on facebook. This was shortly after my first love had died of lung cancer so I really wasn't able to witness too much of what was going on with her. I was scared somehow that I would be next. Every now and then I have the thought that cancer could hit me without warning like it did to my peers, but then I think..."I'm too young, I'm too healthy, I quit smoking, so I'm fine."

If there is one thing I was reminded of after watching this documentary, it was that there is no such thing as "too young, too healthy." Cancer seems random and generous to who it befalls itself upon.

I hope to one day have the courage to step over the line of fear and help this community in whatever way I can.

Ip Man(Yip Man)

I really do enjoy a good true story and this is definitely a good one to watch. Ip Man (Yip Man) is actually a Grand Master of Wing Chun. I never heard of Wing Chun until I learned a little bit more about Bruce Lee. (If you are Asian, then it's is almost impossible to not know of Bruce Lee, - Maybe anywhere on the globe truthfully). But outside of Bruce Lee, I never heard of anyone really who trained in it. (My brother grew up becoming a 4th degree black belt in Hapkido - so that is pretty much my scope of knowing anything about martial arts.)

Then I moved to San Francisco. And then I learned that people train in things like Capoeria, and Krav Maga, and yes, even Wing Chun. Oh, and they do Tae Kwon Do everywhere. (I should recognize that and share with you since I am Korean after all.)

So, back to the film. It's rough tumble. It gets your heart racing and your pulse thumping out of your heart for the majority of the film. It started out feeling like an old 70's Kung Fu film but then quickly turned into a film with depth and storyline.

It's the kind of film that pumps you up and makes you feel like you need martial arts in your life. Maybe a good time to watch this film is when you need some inspiration to get up off your ass and take a class or two.

Good start for 2012. I'm on a roll with good films!

You know of the "Hot coffee" woman and her filing a lawsuit against McDonalds and I'm thinking that many of you are like me and assumed that the lady was just looking for a decent sized pay day right? I am sorry to admit that I believed the media's propaganda (funded largely by bog corporations and Tort Reformist.)

Be informed people! Seek your own education and DO NOT ever believe what is told to you. Look into it and learn for yourself. Always make your best attempt to learn both sides and make up your own mind and STOP letting other make up our minds for us.

I have seen this more than once and I can sincerely say that this might one of the best autobiographical films I have ever seen. I want to meet this man. I was to have long and deep conversations about his story. I want to be his best friend. I am so envious and in awe of his talent and the film did a beautiful job sharing his story.

I highly recommend it when you are feeling the need to feel inspired.

So good! It reminded me a lot of Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan or Tae Guk Gi, by Kang, Je-Kyu. It's very stylized but not unapproachable, a war movie, and gut wrenching.

It's an especially sensitive time in history right now. North Korean dictator Kim Jung Il recently passed away leaving his legacy and dictatorship to his youngest son Kim Jung Eun. It is too soon to tell whether or not he will follow in his Father and Grandfather's footsteps and lead the North Korean people away from the global community. It is sad and this film brings home the heartfelt pain that the Korean people are still suffering. Although the story is a true one based on events that happened over 40 years ago from now, it is still a very good representation of the animosity and fear that the countrymen have towards one another.

I wish for the best possible outcome for the reunification of the North and South. I only pray that those families that have been torn apart by the invisible line of ignorance and misguided patriotism that they may reunite in peace and in this lifetime.

Head - On

She has had her nose broken by her brother for being seen holding hands with a boy and yet she can not break her mother's heart and run away. She too attempts suicide and she first approaches Cahit there at the Hospital. Sibel asks Cahit to marry her, as she believes this to be the way out of her parent's house. She promises Cahit that their relationship will be like roommates, not like a married couple. The film follows Sibel and Cahit as they get married, become closer and eventually fall in love.

Yowza! This is a very well told, very intense, and fast paced film. It's smart, cohesive and II felt jumpy and excited while watching it. Watch it for inspiration if your feeling dumpy, or slumpy.

I found this a relate-able film mostly because I think despite which "Mother-country" you come from, you will find that there are going to be cultural expectations from a first or even second generation child in a new country or culture. It goes beyond just a generational gap and the parent and child will find them becoming cultural strangers because the younger generation will tend to adapt and assimilate so much faster.

Though some might feel that Sibel took particularly dramatic steps to rebel, some may also say my own youth was riddled with nearly comparable drama that filled our lives.

The Servant

Not for the faint hearted. The story of Chunyang is old and this version of the story is one with a twist.
For those of you who do not know this story, it is what you might call a Korean version of Cinderella, or more so of older version of Pretty Woman (starring Julia Roberts.) You know the one where there is a common girl, or "lady of the night" who crosses paths with a hero who saves the day and takes her away from her miserable existence? Well, this version is an even unlikelier tale of two star crossed lovers from the same unforgivable lower peasant class. It's well told. I think technically it is listed as a comedy, although there is nothing really humorous about it. It's almost porn. Yeah, I know! Korean Porn for the masses.

Seriously though, don't try to watch it with your parents around, or even worse, your teenage kids! It will make you blush at least three shades pinker. If your Asian, then have a drink a glass of wine and when you blush, blame it on the alcohol. It's a very sexy film and it's well done. Good for you Korean Cinema! You finally got me hot! Skin - The Movie

It's an idea that is difficult to conceive of, but I have heard of such a case in the UK where a Mother had twin boys. One was white and the other was black. There was a scientific explanation that was plausible and if my memory serves me well, it was because the Mother conceived through IVF. Makes more sense that this film, but nonetheless, it was beautifully told and ultimately it was more of a coming-of-age story in the backdrop of a difficult, ugly and brutal time in South African history. Sandra is beautiful, regardless of her skin color and in an effort to discover herself, she explore herself through her skin color and ventures into a different world, only to find herself yearning to go home.

It's a solid tear jerker, with moments where you will find yourself smiling. It's a very heavy film, but an education for those of you who are oblivious to South African history, apartheid, racism, or good story telling.

Grab some popcorn and issues and snuggle up with someone who can reassure you that "everything will be okay."

Game of Thrones

This is our newest addiction. It's rare that John and I both like the same show but this one nailed it for both of us. John has already read the books and seems to think that the show is doing a good job of relaying the story without omitting too much of the important details. I'm going to have to try to track it down and read them for myself. We finished the whole season already and so I'm hoping the books will help satiate my curiosity for what happens next. Or...should I just wait for the next season....

The "good" characters seem to be more human in their anxieties and reactions whereas the "bad" characters seem to be relentlessly bad for no other reason than they can be, like little King Joffrey, who seems to be a relatively new actor according to his imdb.com listing. I am most impressed however, with the actress that plays Daenerys Targaryen, played by Emilia Clarke. And the dragons at the end crawling all around her! That's some great CGI there. I can't wait for the next season....

For now, I asked John to start calling me Callisi...

Traveling and Watching

I've been on the road for the past 5 months. It has inspired me to watch films about the places we have been visiting. Even if I have already seen them. For example, after visiting The Forbidden City in Beijing, we got on itunes and rented The Last Emperor.

Also, after visiting a Roman Amphitheater in Nimes in France I feel compelled to re-watch Gladiator.

You get the idea. So far, we have been to 16 countries. I have at least 16 movies that I have been inspired to watch or re-watch. I will share them with you as I get the time to watch them and then share with you.

It's a DRAG in RAGE

Independent filmmaker, Sally Potter's new film, RAGE is going to be the "rage" when it comes out. I predict it now. It's impressive cast and interesting costume and makeup for it's stars will make all the men in the audience wonder about themselves and all the women jealous...

Hopefully that will be enough to draw in the crowds. Sally Potter isn't for everyone...alas, too bad. I really do think she's a freaking genius. I read the script of YES, in book form. I'm not sure how it was sent to me, but it's lyrical rhythm and poetic sensibilities made me ache inside. Make note however, I don't always have the patience or depth to appreciate "art" all the time either. Only some times, and usually only in small dosages.

The Three Stooges Remake

I heard through the grapevine that there is talk of a Three Stooges remake.
I'm not sure exactly what they would be remaking. If I remember correctly, the Three Stooges did comedic shorts and not feature films. A remake is bad enough, but the rumour is that Johnny Depp is in the running for Moe, and Sean Penn for Larry, directed by the Farrelly Brothers. No word yet on who will be cast as Curly. I'm thinking that we, as Americans, who know, love and appreciate the OG Three Stooges might not buy into Depp as "Moe" and Penn as "Larry," however, it might be cool if they played the real guys behind the characters. Depp playing Moses Horwitz (AKA Moe Howard), and Penn playing Louis Fienberg (AKA Larry Fine.)

From what I understand the guys actually lived pretty drama filled lives in it of itself. Didn't they die broke? Anyway, if it were more of a bipoic it can be a hit! I'd totally be into that. Kind of like Chaplin, with Robert Downey Jr. Remember that one? That was great! But can Farrelly Brothers pull something like that off? I kind of think of them as goofy guys who make goofy films...albeit funny. The Three Stooges may have been funny characters, but who were they REALLY? That's what I wanna know!

Gran Torino - film

Walt doesn't want to move even though more Asian people live in his Detroit neighborhood than Americans. Walt has a problem with Asians ever since he fought them in the Korean War. This prejudice explodes when Thao, the teenage son of the Hmong family next door, tries to steal his mint condition 1972 Grand Torino car. Thao (played by Bee Vang) was pressured by an Asian gang to steal the car as an initiation rite. To regain the family's honor, Thao is forced to work for Walt. Walt begins to protect Thao from the gangs and soon he becomes a target. - Douglas Young

This is another film that needs to be watched with your confused, sometimes insecure teen, restless at home.

Although I found the acting by some of the cast, namely Bee and Chee Thao (Grandmother), to be a little awkward and inauthentic I found the characters themselves to be engaging and charming enough.

I admit, the dialogue and banter spewing from Kowalski's mouth sometimes made me cringe and squirm in my seat, only to be broken up by the occasional inescapable gasp that I couldn't quite stop. I constantly made up excuses in my head to persevere and appreciate that there are in fact, real people in this world that are indeed like this and represent the ignorant that have yet to be enlightened.

Cushioned in between a middle aged male attendee who appeared to have come by himself and my urbanized "too-cool" teen I found that if that when one was laughing the other wasn't. Well into the film I was becoming increasingly aware that the white guy was laughing at all the abrasive racial slurs while my son and I could do nothing but grit our teeth and bite our tongues.

The characters developed smoothly and believably. When evolving as people, as I, myself have done as well, I think it happens with exposure and really familiarizing ourselves with the unknown. It happened to Kowalski , it happened to me, it happened to you, and hopefully one day it will happen to all of us.

I took my sixteen year old to watch Babya couple of months ago and I wanted to write about it now to tell you and worthwhile it was. Especially if you have a teen in your home.

Although it has a strong indie feel and it isn't as polished as a typical Hollywood film, the production value is great and the storyline is even better. It's hard enough to talk to teens today about the dangers of the streets and the importance of making good friends but taking your teen to a film like this helps stimulate and inspire dialogue and communication.

My son walked away full of thought and questions which he then immediately grilled me with. It was awesome.

Owl and Sparrow Opens today

Synopsis: A girl who refuses to surrender her optimism despite difficult circumstances brings two unlikely strangers together in this comedy-drama from Vietnam. Thuy (Pham Thi Han) is an orphan who, after the death of her parents, has been sent to live with her uncle Tran Le Minh (Nguyen Hau). Tran runs a company that processes bamboo, and he puts Thuy to work in his factory, where's she puts in long hours and is treated poorly by her uncle and his associates. Convinced life has better things to offer, Thuy runs away to Saigon, and she soon makes friends with a handful of plucky fellow orphans who survive on the street and look out for one another. Thuy supports herself by selling flowers, and during her rounds she meets Hai (Le The Lu), a friendly zookeeper who is looking after a baby elephant which is soon to be sold. Thuy and her friends meet every day at a diner where a boy (Hoang Long) serves the kids soup; another regular at the restaurant is Lan (Cat Ly), a stewardess who takes a liking to Thuy and lets the girl stay with her when she's in town on layover. Thuy senses that Lan is lonely, much like Hai, and she decides that with a little intervention on her part, Hai and Lan might make a good couple and she could become their adopted daughter. However, Thuy soon learns that matchmaking is a more challenging task than she realized.

Owl and Sparrow opens today in So. Cal. If you are in the area you should check it out. It looks great and won tons of awards.

I missed it on the festival circuit but I'll try to catch it when it comes to theaters in San Francisco. Unfortunately it looks like it comes to town the weekend of Valentines and I just learned that my John is taking me to Austin, TX then but maybe when I get back into town it will still be around. Otherwise I'll have to hunt it down some other way.

Jackie Chan is Mr. Miyagi???

I heard on the radio this morning that Jackie Chan is in negotiations to play Mr. Miyagi in a Karate Kid remake.

Asian remakes are on fire right now! (Or those with Asians in it).

That said, I wonder if they'll change the name of Mr. Miyagi, because obviously Mr. Miygai is a Japanese name and Jackie Chan is clearly not Japanese. According to reports the filming will take place in Beijing and the U.S.

All said and done, I think Chan is a solid candidate for this remake. He can add a humour and likability that the original Miyagi played by Pat Morita also had.

I loved Karate Kid back then and with Chan playing the mentor role of "Miyagi" or by another name now, I'm sure I'll like it.

I also heard that Will Smith's 10 year old son Jaden Smith will be playing the lead role that Ralph Macchio played of "Daniel San." Seriously, the kid is cute as heck but I'm curious to see what they are going to do.

Incidentally Smith's Production company, Overbrook is also producing the film. Not that I'm sure that has nothing to do with Jaden getting the lead role, even if he does seem a little young for it. ;) ;)

Danny Boyle and Sympathy for Lady Vengence

Wow. Park Chan-Wook is the man! First, there's been talk of Spielberg and Smith doing an Old Boy remake and now the word is out that Danny Boyle, director of award winning Slumdog Millionaire, has been approached to direct Sympathy for Lady Vengeance. What strikes me as a bit odd, is although both films are part of the Vengeance Trilogy, and none of them really share the same story line, why is it that only Old Boy and Lady Vengeance are getting the attention? What about Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance???

All three were incredibly disturbing and after all it IS a part of a TRILOGY. Doesn't seem right to do only two of the three. And truth be told, although I personally was more affected by the Old Boy film, after hearing that Boyle might direct Lady Vengeance I am way more excited than Spielberg/Smith doing Old Boy.

Either way, I'm excited that people are finally starting to appreciate the talent coming out of Korea!

The Unborn

My All time favorite actor Gary Oldman is in a film that opens today called The Unborn. Also, in it is my fb buddy C.S. Lee. I'm not a huge fan of horror flicks but this might be worth checking out. I'm sure Oldman and C.S. would make it worthwhile for me!

The Grand Chef

Touted as the highest rated show in Korea of 2008 I couldn't wait to get my hands on it. Considering it was just broadcast late in the year it was still very new and the buzz still strong. Again, a show about cuisine and the importance of how cuisine introduces and influences acculturation.

Someone asked me if I liked Kim Rae Won in it. I thought about it for a moment and said "I like him like I wish he could be my younger brother, but not like I could have a crush on him." And..it doesn't have anything to do with his age. Trust me, I'm totally comfortable having crushes on younger men.

Anyway, it's solid, clean and fulfilling. It doesn't leave you exhausted and wrecked with emotion.
I caught myself smiling almost throughout all 24 episodes. Seriously, to the point where my cheeks hurt.

It seems like lately I have watched a few dramas that have something to do with Korean cuisine. Although this one use the Blue House (Korea's version of the White House) as the back drop, the food definitely plays almost as big of a role.

I know that Eugene (name of a girl) is really popular but I admit I guess I haven't really paid too much attention to TV drama actors as much. Only because there are so many of them and my brain can only fit so many of them...I truthfully only noticed the cute boys. ;)

That said, I've changed my mind. This Eugene girl has got some serious talent. I totally bought all of it. She's very natural although TV dramas tend to be over-the-top melodramatic sometimes. She's not annoyingly thin, or freakishly re-invented by a nonsensical plastic surgeon.
She comes across as very likable and someone I can envision becoming friends with.

Lee, who is also is Be Strong Geum Soon plays sort of a similar character in the beginning but his personal journey takes a very dramatic turn in the end. That, in it of itself, is almost worth watching.

I wasn't sure if I was going to like this one, but at the end of it I think this might be in my favorite Top Ten.

Again, this is kind of a longer one with a total of 34 episodes...but if you've got the time...why not! Actually, you should make the time for this one...you'll enjoy it! I promise!

Be Strong Geum Soon

Every now and then I watch a drama that I can't help but to be fully addicted to. This is one of them. There were some nights I couldn't stop myself from "watching just one more episode". After all they are in 30 minute episodes rather than the typical 1 hour long ones, so I somehow found it justifiable, although I'd usually squeek by one less hour to get in two episodes. Yep. I'm telling you, it's THAT good.

It fills you with so much emotion from the first episode to the last one, which incidentally ends at episode 163 spread out in a 4 volume series. I know that sounds intimidating but they go by really fast.

This might not be a good series to start with if you're a TV drama series virgin but I'd highly recommend for those who are familiar with TV dramas on DVD.

Wow. FoxSearchlight is on a roll with several great releases including The Secret Life of Bees, The Wrestler and one of my favorites this year Slumdog Millionaire. And all lined up to get some serious recognition this upcoming Award season.

Directed by Danny Boyle, who did some intense films in the past like Trainspotting and 28 Days Later, this is no different. Sitting in a nicely air conditioned theater didn't make me feel any less hot and uncomfortable while watching the Indian heat bare down on Malik unforgivingly and at times with a vengence.

This is a definite MUST SEE and even when the story line ends, sit still and hold your pee. Watch the credits roll and enjoy the ride all the way through the end. The ending after the ending is pure charm!

Planet B-Boy on MTV

A while back ago I received a request on facebook to become a Planet B-Boy fan. I looked into Planet B-Boy and decided "Sure, I'll be a fan". I am totally into supporting Asian American Cinema in whatever way I can. I was a little disappointed because I didn't catch it at the Film Festival and was hoping that I'd be able to get it on DVD for my son and I if and when it eventually came out.

Weeks later I found out that it was finally coming to San Francisco and there was no way I was going to miss the chance to watch Asians breakdancing. I begged my 16 year old son to go with me, even though he protested, knowing he's appreciate not only the film, but that in fact, to also acknowledge his Mother is really hip and cool.

Sitting side by side I'd catch my feet tapping and head bouncing to the fast paced beats pulsating from the screen. I'd look over at Jordan to see doing the same, only better.

It's inspiring and I couldn't help but to feel huge waves of pride being Korean and watching my fellow countrymen being acknowledged and praised for their talent and endurance.

I encouraged Jordan, who doesn't seem to know what he wants to do with his life yet, to go back to school and get a crew together and become B-Boys.

Anyway, for those of you who didn't catch it yet here's your chance. MTV will be airing it on your television. It's totally worth DVRing it for your teens too.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - Review

Okay, you know I am crazy about Cate Blanchett but whoa, this time I was really impressed by Brad Pitt. Although with Burn After Reading and now this, I think I finally see him in a new and brighter light.

The film is a touch long at just under 3 hours and my butt was numb after the first two but as uncomfortable as I was I couldn't get over how beautiful the story was and how my heart started to ache at the anticipation of what was to come.

John did not enjoy it as much as I did, even though he was the one who suggested it in the first place, but I think he was preoccupied with the fact that he had to pee half way into the film and expecting it to end any minute...

I highly recommend this one for the big screen. I don't think the slight details in the reverse aging process for Pitt and the the aging process for Blanchett will come across as eloquently on your TV screen. Fork out the $20.00 and take date. Save Marley and Me for a night out with your girlfriends.

Super Rookie Review

Also starring Han Ga-In (Yellow Handkerchief), Oh Ji-Ho (Couple or Trouble) and Lee So-Yeon (Spring Waltz, Spring Days).

If you are looking for a light hearted Korean drama then this is perfect for you. This is a lot better than what I told to expect.

It's not as addictive as some of the other ones I have watched like Jumong or Dae Jang Geum, but you can probably tell that I'm partial to period pieces. However, just to show you how addictive it can be, my son took the whole set with him to finish it since he got so addicted to it just after the first episode. It's worth a check out.

I don't think John liked this as much as I did...That said, I was exhausted from the neverending action in the film. It was a smart concept that didn't really answer all the questions that were brought up in the film for me...As if they didn't have enough time...BUT still...I found it thouroughly entertaining.

It's definitely worth watching on the big screen although amybe just at a matinee price.

Actress Song Hye-gyo is to debut in the United States through independent movies.
Song has been cast to play a lead in director Sohn Su-beom's first full-length movie "Fetish." It's a psychological thriller about a woman who has unusual skills. Song will play opposite Arno Frisch, who played the lead in "Funny Game."

"Fetish" is a low-budget independent movie, but to Song it will serve as a springboard for her advancement to the U.S. because she will say 80 percent of her lines in English.

The movie's casting director, Susan Shopmaker, said she chose Song because she liked her Asian yet Western image. She added that the movie will reveal a new side of the actress.
Song's agency said the actress's role in the movie will hopefully secure her a spot in the global film industry.

Jang Dong-Gun to Star in Hollywood Action Movie
Korean star Jang Dong-Gun (All About Eve, Medical Brothers) will star alongside Kate Bosworth in an upcoming Hollywood movie called "Laundry Warrior," which started shooting in New Zealand on Nov. 12.

The movie is being produced by "Lord of the Rings" and "Matrix" producer Barrie Osborne and helmed by Korean Lee Seung-Moo, according to entertainment newspaper Variety. Geoffrey Rush will also star with Bosworth and Jang."Laundry Warrior" is a futuristic action-fantasy story about an Asian warrior's adventures in the American west. Jang plays a fugitive warrior who hides out in the badlands, where he encounters a town drunk (Rush) and a beautiful woman (Bosworth) who dreams of revenge for the abuse she suffered as a child.Bosworth has appeared in "Superman Returns", "Win a Date with Tad Hamilton!", "Beyond the Sea," and "Remember the Titans." Rush has starred in "Munich" and the "Pirates of the Caribbean". Variety stated "Jang is the star of many of Korea's biggest grossing movies including 'Typhoon,' 'Taegukgi' and 'Friend.'"

Previous reports said Jang would be working with Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi, but the PR firm said Zhang couldn't fit the movie into her schedule. The Hollywood actress was chosen for the leading role since the lead female character had changed, the firm said.

Synopsis: Someday is about four different people's story about love.
Hana Yamaguchi (Bae Doo-Na) was a successful young cartoonist in Japan. Abandoned by her parents and brought up by her grandma, she was cold and aloof and did not believe in love which to her was only a simple biological response. When the elderly neighbourhood street sweeper died, she discovered the affection between him and her neighbour which lasted 60 years. Hana could not understand this kind of love, so she decided to trace her neighbour's footstep to Korea when she disappeared with her lover's ashes.

Go Jin Pyo (Kim Min Joon) was a doctor who was a comic book fan of Hana. He was overjoyed in meeting Hana and believed that he was in love for the first time in his life. He decided to help Hana in fulfilling her wish to look for her neighbour and enlisted the help of a private eye, Lee Seok Man (Lee Jin Wook).Lee was the sole survivor of a car accident whereby his parents and brother were killed. He carried a lot of guilt towards the parents of the other victim and did his best to help out even at the expense of owing money to the loan sharks.

Hye Young (Oh Yoon Ah) was a PD of animation projects and a close friend of Jin Pyo. she didn't realize that she was in love with him till Hana appeared.
In bringing her neighbour's love story to fruition and published in print, the process changed the lives and outlook on love for these four people.

I'm suprised I enjoyed this as much as I did. But I have to admit, I don't think it's for all K-drama fans.

It's a little bit more artsy and it has a very strong indie feel for a soap drama. It feels as if it's a very very long film/ animated story from a manga rather than a television drama. The quality of the video is grainy as if it was shot on film (but it's probably something closer to a DVX ~~ I'll stop right there from pretending like I really know much more than that)

The music is catchy, the characters are likeable, and it's very well composed and thought out. The animation and the art work made me jealous and envious of all who have the ability to create art through their finger tips like Hana Yamuaguchi's character does, and all in all, it was very enjoyable and modern.

Notes on a Scandal - DVD Review

When pottery instructor Sheba Hart (Cate Blanchett) dives into an illicit affair with one of her students, she creates a sticky situation that spells turmoil for herself and puts a fellow teacher in a tough spot. St. George faculty member Barbara Covett (Judi Dench) connects with the pretty new art teacher, but things get complicated when Sheba divulges her secret. Bill Nighy and Max Lewis support the two Oscar-nominated actresses.

Ohhh....Talk about INTENSE. It's like the Mary Kay Letourneau story meets Single White Female meets Misery. I typically tend to really like Cate Blanchett. She's ridiculously beautiful and obscenely talented and I don't recall ever having thought she underperformed in anything I've ever seen.

That said, this was no exception. There is a scene between Dench and Blanchett where I nearly peed my pants in terror. Not the kind of terror in the blood and gore sense, but really in the sense of "OMFG, I can't believe they acted this out in front of people" or "OMFG, I can't believe that someone had the imagination/sickness to write this scene," or "OMFG, that must've HURT!!!"

My skin tingled, my eyes teared up, and my heart ached for the characters.

Well fucking done women!

Four Sister's DVD Review

Buyers beware...Four Sisters did not do it for me...

Okay, I know this is one of our own titles, BUT just in case you might think I have ulterior motives by giving rave reviews for K-dramas just because I work for the publisher I had to bring this title up.

I made an honest attempt to watch this a few weeks ago.

I only did so, because my Mom and sister said it was really good. Maybe it just didn't do it for me because I had just finished watching Jumong. My goodness, that's a killer to try to follow up after.

It was a little slow for me and although the cast is generally good and appealing maybe they just didn't have the chemistry I am used to in K-drama's.

Usually, within the first 2 episodes I am in near tears or in a near frenzy with anticipation and excitement over what will unravel over the next few days. I didn't feel either within the first 4 episodes so I eventually gave up.

I haven't attempted to watch it again since I have so many more to watch...but maybe one day I'll get back to it and finish it...and change my mind...and give a better review.

But I'm warning you...if you are looking for another K-drama to watch...take it from me. There are so many other better ones!

But, just in case you are a die hard fan of K dramas or the very hunky Han Jae-Suk, then check it...

He really is adorable huh? If only the story was a little better I almost might have stuck it through...

Full House DVD Review

I finally finished watching the very popular Korean Drama Full House.

I had to see what the hype was about for myself.

Being on the distribution side of these DVD's has it's pro's and con's for sure. I LOVE that I get to watch all of these but then too, I feel like I HAVE to watch them...Oddly enough, even if I would have anyway, the instant I think to myself that I HAVE to watch it, it becomes less fun somehow.

Anyway, after watching Dae Jang Geum and Jumong, I finally thought I was finally ready for something a little bit more modern. Both DJG and Jumong are epic period peices, which I typically tend to gravitate more towards, but after two in a row I needed something less heavy.

Wow! I had been hearing about singer turned actor Bi (Rain) for a while but I wasn't really familiar with him.

But, now after watching him in Full House, I'm a FAN! How adorable is he? more pics...

Oh, the drama Full House totally ROCKS! I watched all 16 episodes in 3 days. I'm almost ashamed to admit it but sometimes when I start one of these new series I sometimes forget to eat...and forget about sleeping...

Including the special features which I have now decided is one of the best things about having your own dvd box set.

Anyway, if you are looking for Korean DVD's let me know and I'll track down the best deal for you.

My Lovely Sam-Soon - DVD Review

Seriously...I've just got to tell you how much I ADORED this DVD series.

It's totally unlike any of the other Korean dramas I have ever seen. It's so charming and cuter than anything else. It sorta reminds me of Amelie... in the first couple of episodes.

Admittedly though, I haven't been watching as regularly as I used to. I'm catching up now though...

I don't want to presume that men are too brutish to be able to entertain themselves with this specific title...but I can almost guarantee that at least 99% of you women will LOVE this!

Tom Everett Scott, Colin Ferguson and Gabriel Macht also star director Michael Lehmann's engaging romantic comedy.

You know what??? I must be going through a cheesy phase right now. I haven't been in the mood for my typically heavy handed holocaust/gay, films/documentaries lately. Maybe because I have so many other things that are forcing me to stay focused I just need a break and want to just be entertained...sappy stories are always a good remedy for stress...

Anyway, this is a totally cute movie. Mandy Moore is so adorable...I really like her as an actor and there's something about her that makes me think I'd even like her as a person. I just can't stand her name. Can you imagine what it's like to be named Mandy? Ewww...Well, maybe it's not that bad after all. It just brings back memories of someone I think I used to know. Winter Sonata - Review

I just finished watching Winter Sonata this last weekend.

I swear by episode 2 I was bawling my head off uncontrollably.
There is something to say about a good crier. It's so relieving, refreshing, reviving...

For those of you who have never watched a Korean DVD, you ARE missing out. My girlfriends and I have spent many a nights staying up watching episode after episode until just within 3 days and 2 nights we'd have gone through a whole show of 16 - 20 one hour episodes. That's 16 - 20 hours of sitting in front of a TV, only to take breaks to eat and pee. Somehow, even though I spent the better part of Saturday busy with friends at the beach and even spending the night at John's, I still managed to get through the whole box set.

There's something so satisfying about getting to the end.

I loved it! I highly recommend it. It's not for the weak hearted but definitely for everyone who doesn't believe that Korean guys are hot! There are some very HOT men in this show, including Bae, Yong Jun. Enjoy!

The Good Earth

Argh! The movie IS CRAP!!!! Don't watch it. The main characters have all been yellow faced!

ARGH! Okay, so it was made in 1937.

The book is SOOO much better!

The Queen

This Oscar-nominated drama for Best Picture goes behind the scenes as the queen and prime minister try to manage Diana's death on a personal level while also dealing with a public calling for royal treatment for their beloved princess.

It got so much hype during the Oscars that I felt I needed to see this one. Even though I'm not all too interested in the Royal Family. I'm not one of those people who follow what's going on with the freaks in all the tabloids...the Brits included.

It's actually a turn off so I really had to psyche myself out to watch it...but I'm glad I did. Although, I've watched many documentaries and films about the history of England including the Royal family, I've nevere really cared about the present time too much. I admit though, I did cry when I heard Proncess Diana died. I'm not exactly sure why I did, but I remember exactly where I was (at a bar shooting pool with my best friend Mona) and how I reacted. It was almost surreal and I was affected by it...

Anyway, it's worth a watch...might even be better to watch a few years down the line when this becomes more of a historical story rather than being such a freakish fascination with the Family.

The Pursuit of Happyness

Synopsis: Will Smith (in an Oscar-nominated role) and his real-life son Jaden star in this tearjerker about a struggling single parent determined to build a better life for himself and his child. Chris Gardner is smart and talented, but his dead-end salesman job barely pays the bills. When he and his 5-year-old son are evicted from their apartment, they face trying times as Chris takes on an unpaid internship at a stock brokerage firm with hopes of getting rich someday.

I loved it. It's always so cool when I watch a film shot in my beloved San Francisco. It was strange to see how much San Francisco hasn't changed since 1981. ;)

I imagine Chinatown hasn't changed so much. Anyway, the film is a real heart clencher!

I love stories based on true events and especially when the REAL person is introduced in the special features. That said...if you do watch this! (And I recommend that you do!) watch the Special Features where the REAL Chris Gardner is interviewed.

It's super inspirational, so if you are looking for an inspiring film then check it out.

Train Man: Densha Otoko

Synopsis: While riding the train, a desperate geek meets the girl of his dreams, prompting the socially deprived but brave young nerd to start a chat room thread asking his faceless Internet compatriots, "How do you talk to girls?" The courtship advice he receives from his online pals -- and what he does with their expert counsel -- form the basis for this charming romantic comedy, a love story for the 21st century.

This film is incredibly stylized and crafty. It's kind of like a Wong Kar Wai film, but good. (Ohhh...I'm gonna get some shit for saying that)

The difference really is that this film is a romantic comedy and thus much more charming that anything that I've seen from Wong Kar Wai. His films are also very stylized but very dreary and confused.

Every now and then I'll put a dvd into the player and sit contentedly to watch it alone. I've given up trying to watch dvd's with any of my friends and my boyfriend. Nobody really seems to like the movies that I enjoy watching. But into the first 10 minutes of the film I thought that this was something that even my boyfriend would enjoy so "should I stop it and watch it together?" Eh! I was hooked in the first 10 minutes, like any good film SHOULD do. I gave in, snuggled deeper into my couch with Socrates and contentedly watched it alone.

That said, basically it's so cute that you could watch it with almost anyone...provided they don't mind reading subtitles.

The Nativity Story

From director Catherine Hardwicke (Thirteen), this meticulously researched and visually lush adaptation of the biblical tale follows the pair on their arduous path to their arrival in a small village, where they find shelter in a quiet manger and Jesus is born. Shohreh Aghdashloo co-stars.

I'm a sucker for a good bible story. I'm thinking that I'm not the only one either. I was thinking this as I was watching this. There are so many bible movies made. Although the story of the conception of Christ has always bugged me a little, I thought I'd be turned off by this film, but to my surprise I feel like they did a great job in justofying things out for me. Not that I buy into it 100% but at least it makes a little bit more sense now.

If you need a little explanation about Mary's immaculate conception or you too, are a sucker for a good bible story then I highly recommend.

Loving Annabelle

A highly charged and ambitious little indie flick. It's defintely a little uncomfortable to watch but very well done and incredibly sexy to watch. There is something a little bit clumsy in the acting but for what is is it's very well done.

I recommend...but only if you can stand being a little uncomfortable with the story line.

Forgiving Dr. Mengele

In this documentary, Kor returns to Auschwitz on a quest to heal her wounds with an astonishing and controversial act of forgiveness.

You may be thinking "Alyx! You watch too many depressing documentaries!"

If I were you I might be saying the same thing. But really, some of these stories are so damn inspirational. It helps put our own lives into perspective.

This is one of those documentaries. It's so worthwhile and inspirational. It makes you feel grateful for being alive and make you appreciatve for the life you are living...even if you think it's full of crap.

Reinas (Queens)

Unax Ugalde and Daniel Hendler co-star.

I loved this film. It's so sharp and entertaining. I really think there are so many well done Spanish comedies that don't get enough attention. I was slightly fearful that I woulnd't be able to follow the ensemble cast but they did a perfect job of creating important and significant story lines for each character.

Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles

Synopsis: Hoping to mend a deep rift with his dying son, steely Japanese fisherman Gouichi Takada (Ken Takakura) sets off for a remote province in China to fulfill his son's dream in this gentle drama helmed by Yimou Zhang. Despite the obstacles in Takada's path -- including a language barrier and government red tape -- he's determined to complete his son's unfinished documentary by filming a jailed Chinese folk-opera star performing a classic ballad.

You know I'm a huge fan of Yimou so I had no choice but to watch this one, but I can't say that I enjoyed it nearly as much as his period pieces. Every now and then he does these modern stories that just don't seem to have the same effect on me. They aren't as beautiful cinemagraphically, although the story is still well developed.

If you're as huge of a Yimou fan as I am, then you MUST watch this...but be warned. It's not one of his best ones.

Forgiving Dr. Mengele

An extremely valuable film. It's not as heavy as you might expect it to be. It's actually a great story for anyone who has had some wrong done to them. Although you may think there's something weird about how I watch so many holocaust films I find it a fascinating part of our human history. This one is full of strength and hope as much as it full of an interesting part of history that I'm certain too many do not know about. Check it out.

Apologize to the Comfort Women

I first heard about Comfort Women a few years ago in a documentary called Silence Broken : Korean Comfort Women.

I can't find where you can buy the DVD but you can find a book on it through Amazon.com. (link provided).

Also, after a quick chat with filmmaker, turned into political activist Eric Byler I learned that he also did a little something that can be seen on youtube.

I remember when I first learned about this I was so sad and frustrated that I never knew about these women and their stories. How come we aren't educated abut these issues in school? Did you know? Shit! I even went to Grad school for Asian American Studies and I never knew.

Well, it's a little depressing I know... but it's one of those things that deserves our attention and education.

Little Children

I think this was a recommendation from someone but I don't quite remember who told me about it. Anyway, whoever recommended it to me..."THANKS!" It really was great!

That said, for everyone who hasn't seen it yet, consider this my recommendation to you.

THIS is what an independent film should be like. Charming, real, gutsy, and somewhat authentic. Indie's are not for everyone. I know this. Some people just prefer "Hollywood" films. I stopped questioning their taste a long long time ago...Anyway, I digress.

Watch this one. Even if you don't wantch indies. This is really good one!

The Motel

Synopsis: In Michael Kang's compelling story about growing up, Ernest Chin (Jeffrey Chyau) is a Chinese-American teen who works in a seedy motel with his hard-nosed mother, grandfather and younger sister. With no male role model to turn to, Ernest must deal with the trials of adolescence on his own. Sam Kim (Sung Kang), a charming Korean American with a dark past, sees himself in Ernest and decides to mentor the boy, but things don't always go smoothly.

SHITE! I can't tell if I'm expecting too much, if I'm being extra critical, or if it really is just that bad. (It could also be that Sung Kang is in it, and you probably know by now how I feel about him...ARGH!)

It was slower than shite...and I felt like it lacked something. Like, charm maybe. I am so fed up with Asian American films like this. They are so depressing. Like all of our lives suck or something. It doesn't! My life is RAD! It always has been and always will be. Okay, I'm lying...but I really am sick of watching Asian American film that are crying about how hard it is being an Asian American kid. It's hard being a kid at all! (PERIOD!)

Hmmm...maybe I'm being to hard on it. Just because I'm tired as fuck of these kinds of films, maybe other people aren't. So...don't listen to me. Go watch it. It's not really interesting or anything, but hell...I respect the shite outta Michael Kang for getting a feature done, AND impressing the hell outta people because it got a ton of attention.

I will freely admit that people have told me I have bad taste in films. Consider this an apology to anyone who thought this is better than I am giving it credit for.

But if you have bad taste in films like me...don't bother...unless you're Korean American. You are officially obligated to watch it.

P.S. I just realized I might be sick of shite like this because it's too familar? I personally am not gaining any insight...but hmmm...maybe you will.

What a suprisingly charming little flick! It kind of reminds me a little of Nurse Betty.
Remember how cute yet disturbing that was? Anyway, I highly recommend it. Don't expect it to be light and fluffy though...It definitely falls under the dark comedy genre.

Elling

Bay to Breakers

My man ran the Bay to Breakers today.

I've never been so it was a great excuse to finally go. To cheer on my man...who actually ran instead what most of the other folks did...Have another excuse to do what San Franciscans do best...Dress up in the weirdest things possible (and in many cases, not to dress up in anything at all) and PARTY! Even if it's at 8 AM.

Unfortunately I woke up late so I didn't really get to cheer him while he raced, BUT I did try to chase him down in my car... but without luck, so I just did the next best thing. Go to the end of the race and wait for him there.

Wow. I don't know what makes people think I'm a film snob. For the record...I'M NOT! I thought it was hilarious. I guess I was expecting it to be terrible. I heard that people walked out of the theaters. Huh? Why? It's not that bad. Sure, I did cringe a few times, and had to close my eyes a couple of times, but come on people...can't you take a JOKE?!

I feel 100% comfortable recommending it.

Music and Lyrics

This isn't the cutest Hugh Grant film I've ever seen. It's probably one of the more cheesier ones in fact. It's a decent light hearted film though so if you're in the mood for cheesy and light, then go fer it!

However, Drew Barrymore looks fabulous in it doesn't she!?!

The Other Side of Sunday

Maria is terribly aware of her burgeoning sexuality and takes solace in long walks and secret readings of the racy text in the Old Testament. While out strolling, Maria encounters a woman who encourages her to test her sexual wings and savor life, but that's easier said than done for the reclusive girl.

It's a bit sexy and unnerving for me personally...and a touch on the slow side. I'm not opposed to sexy, but I am when it's sexiness exuding from a teenager. In a forgeign launguage none the less. Call me square...yep. Maybe that's it.

But still very worthwhile.

The Times of Harvey Milk

A staunch fighter for gay rights, Milk helped forge a presence for the city's gay community in city hall, becoming the first openly gay member of San Francisco's combative city council. But his life, along with Mayor George Moscone's, was cut short by infamous fellow politico Dan White.

This is truly one of the best documentaries I have ever seen. Even better because it's about the beautiful people in my most appreciated City. San Francisco.

Watch it, learn from it, love it...as much as I did.

Heart of the Game

Synopsis: Attending predominantly white Roosevelt High because her mother thinks she'll have better opportunities under the school's successful coach, gifted black hoopster Darnellia Russell puts herself -- and her coach -- through the wringer. Shot in a suburban Seattle high school over a seven-year period, director Ward Serrill's stirring documentary explores the complicated relationship between gender, race and organized sports.

It's kind of like whale rider, or billy elliot. You know how it goes. Kid wants to do something that other little boys or girls do, but doesn't really get the credit they deserve because it's taboo. Well, it's something like that anyway, only it's a documentary. That said, it brings up some interesting notions of the differences between boys and girls in high school star athletics.

I found that I was torn between the two sides. Neither was right, or wrong. I think that I might have felt different if I was in her shoes, or even if it was my own child who was facing the conflict.

Basically, the bottom line is...Parents! Don't let your teenage daughters get pregnant before they are ready! Or at least until after they graduate high school...

Fast Food Nation

Synopsis: Richard Linklater's fictional tale (inspired by Eric Schlosser's 2001 book of the same name) critiques the junk-food juggernaut that's arguably responsible for America's alarming obesity rates. Don Henderson (Greg Kinnear), a corporate exec of a national fast-food chain, follows beef's journey from the corrals to the slaughterhouses and ultimately to your stomach. The power cast includes Ethan Hawke, Patricia Arquette and Bruce Willis.

It's the kind of film I wish I never saw. It was kind of sitting through 5th grade Health all over again and learning about where chicken nuggets came from. Only...much...MUCH...worse.

I know this was based on a book so I guess I'm gonna have to go look for it now since I'm confused with how the ensemble cast played out in the novel. I kept thinking of that while watching it, completely convinced that I would have had to reread the book one chapter after another, trying to remember who was who and why he is relevent.

I'll tell you how much I like the film after I read the book.

The Holiday

Can you say "OVERACTING!?"

Ugh...I'm usually somewhat impressed by Diaz's ability to come appear to be natural. "Loved the dancing scene in Charlie's Angels!? Hilarious! Her singing scene in My Best Friends Wedding?! Even better!

Although I liked some of the light heartedness of this full blown chick flick...it was by far not one of my top 10's....even The Sweetest Thing was better than this!

Paradise Lost Part I and Part II

Synopsis: Shedding light on the legal system -- and on the media machine that often demonizes the accused -- this gripping documentary follows the notorious West Memphis Three, a trio of boys arrested for the murders of three children found in a creek bed. Appearing on many critics' year-end Top 10 lists for 1996, this film from directors Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky also won the National Board of Review's prestigious prize for Best Documentary.

It's a terrible thing when you learn about children being brutally murdered. I understand this. It makes me as sick to my stomach as the next person. That is NOT what these documentaries are about though.

I watched Paradise LostPart I and II of the documentaries back to back. As I watched Part I, I couldn't help but to wonder if I was going crazy or not. I started to wonder if the filmmakers were the kind of folks that were just showing us bit and pieces to show us how inadequate the justice system was, or even worse, how inadequte they were as documentarians.

The following pictures are of the three boys they arrested for the brutal murders of the three eight year old boys.

They may not look like church boys, but they didn't look like harden, cold murderers either...not that Ted Bundy did...but you know what I mean. It was uncomfortable to watch these kids go through what they did, for crimes, I didn't believe they commited.

Unfortunately the guys are still fighting for their freedom even though there has been some evidence reintroduced to the case which I feel would release them. I guess I don't really understand our Justice system. You'd think it would be somewhat difficult to convict someone of murder with no evidence...apparently not. (See previous post "After Innocence")

I know it's depressing to watch documentaries like this...especially when you finally get some free time...the last thing you want to do is watch a dreary, almost hopeless documentary...but if you can find the energy, then please take the time to watch this and then help spread the word.

Get Real

Ohhh....Can you say saucy?

Okay, so it's slightly disturbing that I just said that about these teenagers but really it's a very well done, saucy film. Juicy even.

The actors all did very convincing portrayals of tortured teen souls struggling to find their places in the world. I liked it. It reminded me of myself sorta growing up. Almost a lone Asian girl in a sea of non-Asian people...Always an outsider, trying to fit in...until I moved to San Francisco anyway...

I was thinking of that when I popped in the DVD into the player. "Another gay film!?" I thought, almost as exasperated at myself as I know my bf is with me when he finds out what genre of film I'm currently "into".

With all the gay and holocaust films I've been watching lately you'd think I was a closet gay Jewess...I'm not...But, as I wondered about it last night I came to the conclusion it's because in a weird way I guess it's my own need to know how human (the good and the bad) we really are...and unfortunately I don't often get that feeling when I'm watching the latest Will Ferrell flick.

Anyway, watch the dvd if you haven't already. Sit back and enjoy the human-ness of yet another great English film.

Soldier's Girl

Okay, so you know I love true stories...and I'm a sucker for love stories...I'm a girl. It comes with the territory. This has all the elements of a solid, real, and well done indie film. Along the vein of Boys Don't Cry, it make this part of reality within our society that is so shameful and sad. It's full of hope, and honesty, and ultimately a heavy despair...Most importantly, I felt a sincere anxiousness for these two to love each other and hoped that they would live happily ever after...(Wow...amazing performances from each actor!)

However, their friendly competition evolves into a bitter rivalry making them fierce enemies-for-life and consequently jeopardizing the lives of everyone around them. Set against the backdrop of turn-of-the-century London.

I really liked this much more than I thought I would...And not only because Christian Bale is in it. (OMG...though...seriously. He is one of my favorite actors I think...after Gary Oldman of course.) Both men prove to be extremely versatile and completely believeable.

The film jumps around a lot, and you really have to pay attention to what's going on if you want to get the most out of it. At some point I had to turn the subtitles on too, because I couldn't understand or hear some of the dialogue. Regardless though, it was well done I thought.

The only thing that was a smidge disappointing was that about half way through the film, we were able to guess how it would end (kind of). Eh, I guess that's okay...if you don't mind that sorta thing.

Synopsis: With the emergence of DNA evidence, the justice system is seeing a wave of reversed criminal convictions. But what happens to those who are set free, sometimes decades after being imprisoned for a crime they didn't commit? Jessica Sanders takes a close look at some of these people in this gripping documentary that's both a harsh criticism of the current judicial system and a touching look at those profoundly affected by it.

It's scary to watch something like this and then take a step out of your home. Although I don't think that it was completely Sanders intention to instill fear from of the viewers (although I do believe that there was some intent), I do think that she wanted us to feel the outrage that I clearly did feel. It's a scary thing to think that there are so many people wrongfully accused of such horrible crimes and spending years, decades even for merely having the same skin color, hair color, or even general height or weight of the real criminal.

We are not safe. I hate that our system failed so many, and the scariest part is that I really didn't even know about it until I watched this documentary.

Please watch it.

Synopsis: In 2002, two rival Olympic ice skaters were stripped of their gold medals and permanently banned from men's single competition. Presently, however, they've found a loophole that will allow them to qualify as a pairs team.

This isn't something I would normally watch in the theater but what else can I do to try to keep my son entertained?

Although, I have enjoyed several of Ferrell's other many many over-the-top and ridiculous movies I can honestly say that this is one of my least favorites. That said, I do think though that guys will still find it entertaining and it's very mindless and had its moments where I did surprise myself by laughing out loud.

It's really too bad that Heder will never get as great as a role as he did in Napolean Dynamite.
That really showcased his amazing talent as an actor. I haven't seen him in anything else since except for some kind of car commercial...and this role was super disappointing for me to watch him in.

Oh, and it's safe to take the kids to watch...(I mean teenagers).

I totally am so proud of myself when I find films like this...Totally obscure, random, but really good.

I've always appreciated Lewis, but when I first read this I was doubtful of her ability to pull off a character that wasn't retarded, a murderer, or a drug addict. C'mon...admit it...she plays those roles pretty damn convincingly.

Anyway, it's half way solid attempt at Lewis breaking out of her shell, and I can honestly say that I enjoyed it.

Check it out...it's worth a watch.

Synopsis: This drama set in southern California follows brothers Skeet (Jeremy Sumpter) and Randy (Eric Christian Olsen), who find a common bond in surfing when Randy gives his younger brother a surfboard for his birthday. As Skeet attempts to learn the ins and outs of surfing, Randy gets a girlfriend, and the two brothers drift apart. Will their love for surfing be enough to reunite them in the end? Mark Harmon also stars as surf legend Jim Wesley.

It's not the deespest, most entertaining dvd's you can ever watch...but it's sweet, simple and has some entertaining surfing shots.

I grew up near a beach and nearly every guy I knew was a surfer...I don't remember any asshole surfers, although I'm sure there were many...

Anyway, if you are into surfer movies than I suggest this would be a good way to kill an hour and a half of your dateless night.

Also, very safe to watch with your kids.

Synopsis: An 11-year-old boy has his life changed forever when he befriends the class outsider, a girl. Together they create the world of Terabithia, an imaginary kingdom filled with giants, trolls and other magical beings.

I so needed this. A friend and I chatted online trying to figure out what movie to watch to help me stay busy and distracted enough from wanting to smoke. (Can you tell I'm struggling with this yet?)

He suggested Bridge to Terabithiaafter asking me if I'd read the book yet. (I hadn't). "This will be perfect!" I thought after he asked if I felt like a good kleenex movie...although I never heard that exact phrase used before I knew what he meant. Maybe it's a PNW phrase...or a filmmaker thing that they are saying now-a-days, but I wouldn't have the foggiest, since I'm so out of the scene now.

Boy, he wasn't kidding. They should have handed out kleenex as you walked into the theater. (Great product placement idea...you heard it here first!) My poor sleeves were all wet and stretched out from wiping my tears. It was so emotionally draining that I thought "Wow, a cigarette would really be so relaxing about now."

Okay, seriously...Although there were a lot of kids in the theater I didn't really feel like it was appropriate for young children. I wouldn't receommend anyone under 10 years old for sure. I was bawling my head off as well as the folks around me, kids included. If you need a good cry...go watch it. It's totally so worth it. But, it doesn't have to watched on the big screen. If you can wait for DVD then do so, BUT you MUST watch it.

Anne Frank: The Whole Story

Synopsis: Anne Frank's acclaimed diary, kept while in hiding in Amsterdam during World War II, enjoys the highest readership of any book ever printed (except the Bible). This filmed version fills in gaps omitted when her father (the only family member to survive the Nazi holocaust) submitted the work for publication. The story follows Anne to Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, where she died just days before liberation.

I'm ashamed to admit I have never read this story. I wonder why...It seems like it something we should have learned about in school. Although I do vaguely recall hearing about it...I was probably too young to appreciate it anyway. It was so interesting that as soon as the DVD ended I jumped online and ordered the book.

(Damn...I can really use a cigarette right now!)

It's a very long DVD. Over 3 hours, but if you have the time and even if you do know about her story I still recommend that you watch it. It's one of those things that reminds you to be grateful for what you have and to be thankful for being alive.

Rising Son: The Legend of Skateboarder Christian Hosoi

Synopsis: Dennis Hopper narrates Cesario Montano's documentary on the roller-coaster life of skater legend Christian Hosoi. Earning the awe of his peers in the mid-1980s, Hosoi then hit rock bottom with crystal meth use and imprisonment for drug trafficking. He found redemption in Christianity and now strives to be a positive influence. Interviews with skaters such as Tony Hawk, Jason Lee and Tony Alva, and never-before-seen home videos, are included.

It's a little weird to watch someone I used to know for a second in a whole DVD about his life and how great he was. The DVD was very well done...They kept some of the best skating shots (non - Christian Hosoi) in the Special Features which you should defintely watch anyway...especially if you are into skate boarding, which I am NOT, but was still very very good. I highly recommend this DVD. It doesn't only follow his life as a skate boarder but also about his addiction to meth, his stint in prison, and what he's been doing since he got out of prison.

Wow, and I thought I lived a colorful life...

girls - book review

This is one of the best erotica books I have ever read. Most erotica books I have come across have been written by women, but, Girls written by Nic Kelman, is most definitely by a MAN.

Not only is it incredibly sexy, but it's very insightful. I might believe that this was written for men, but wouldn't be surprised if women appreciated it more.

There were times throughout the book that I would literally have to put the book on my lap and ruminate on the last paragraph read.

'I've asked stupid questions of my boyfriends before.' I realized. 'Is that what he thinks when there is no right way to answer me?'

'Have I trained my boyfriend to lie to me by asking him if I look fat in that dress?'

'Does my boyfriend secretly want to sleep with almost every young girl he encounters?'

Yep...these are the questions I found asking myself, reading faithfully...while on the bus ride to and from work each day for the past week.

Anyway, I highly recommend this book...not for the faint hearted. Nor for any prudes. Enjoy!

Now in its fourth year, the American Screenwriting Competition (ASC) is consciously structured to give the best screenplays the greatest chance to make it through the competition. A Star is Born

Synopsis: This Academy Award-winning remake of a heartbreaking 1954 musical features Barbra Streisand in the role immortalized by Judy Garland. Esther Hoffman (Streisand) is on the brink of stardom, thanks to her monumental singing talent and her nurturing mentor, John Norman Howard (Kris Kristofferson), a veteran rocker who's also her lover. Unfortunately, his once-bright luster is on the wane, and her rise bristles against his impending decline.

A very hot film. As in Hot! Sizzle, sizzle hot. Well mostly because Kris Kristofferson has an amazingly beautiful body.

This is one of those film where I didn't watch it when it came out because well, I was too damn young. It was one of those films I always meant to watch but never got around to it...until last night. I think if I watched it when I was even a little bit younger I might have not been able to appreciate it much because it's very dated and Barbra's hair is incredibly distracting. "Why did women do their hair like that?" I kept wondering. Also, I might have not been able to appreciate the beautiful body of Kristofferson. Sheesh, I sure am a sucker for a beautiful body.

The only bad part of it for me was there was too much music. It's really felt like I was watching concert after concert. We are shown whole songs being sung. Is that really neccessary? I got the idea after the first 3 minutes of the performance. They killed too much time with that part...and it doesn't really play out like a musical either so the performances were kind of lost on me. It also might have helped if I was familiar with the songs...at least then it would have been nostalgic. Maybe it was great for the time though.

The chemistry between the two actors were phenomenol. Like, I totally bought that they loved each other. I really don't see or feel that much intimacy in films now a days. That was special...

If you're like me and have been meaning to watch this but never really got around to it, and really didn't even think about it until now, then I recommend that you get it it now, while you are thinking about it.

The Twilight Samurai - Tasogare Seibei

Synopsis: A heartfelt elegy directed by Yoji Yamada, The Twilight Samurai tells the story of Seibei Iguchi (Hiroyuki Sanada), a man who has trained as a samurai and belongs to a samurai clan, but doesn't fight alongside them in any battles. Instead, Seibei, a recent widower, has devoted himself to caring for his two daughters and ailing mother. His reluctance to fight makes him a curiosity -- and soon lands him an assignment that could cost him his life.

This isn't really what I expected. Although I figured there would be less action than a regular Samurai film, it had almost none. Needless to say I was a little bit disappointed. ONLY because it didn't meet my expectations. Otherwise it was a very good film. I felt my heart tugging in all right places at all the right times and had I not been so worried about Socrates being sick I might have even shed a tear. So, if you want to check it out, you totally should. But consider yourself warned...it's NOT an action flick.

Delicatessen

Synopsis: Gentle clown Louison (Dominique Pinon) moves into an apartment building with a deli on the ground floor and falls for the butcher's daughter, Julie (Marie-Laure Dougnac). It's soon discovered that Julie's father (Jean-Claude Dreyfus) is actually butchering people ( a la Sweeney Todd) and selling the meat to tenants. At a crossroads, Julie must decide whether to remain loyal to her father or expose him to save Louison from becoming the next entree.

What a fun film. I can imagine that the cast and crew had the best time making it. Directed by Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet, (director of some of my other favorites, Amelie, A Very Long Engagment, City of Lost Children). It is highly stylized and incredibly charming, like the forementioned.

If you enjoyed any of his previous films, you'll LOVE this at least as much as I did. If you do watch it, pay attention to the music and the sound effects...they did the BEST job I have ever seen.

Everything is illuminated

Synopsis: A young American Jewish man begins an exhausting quest -- aided by a naïve Ukranian translator -- to find the righteous gentile woman who saved his grandfather when his small Ukranian village (along with most of the populace) was obliterated during the Nazi invasion of Russia in 1941. Stars Elijah Wood, Eugene Hutz and Boris Leskin. Liev Schreiber directs. Based on the novel by Jonathan Safran Foer.

Another Elijah Wood movie. Yep. I know...too much you might say...but seriously, this was so worth watching. I loved it. I know I watch a ton of dreary Holocaust themed films but I've got to say this was was one of the sweetest. (I realize that's weird to say).

It's deep and moving, yet incredibly charming and sweet.

I know it seems like I've been sending lots of plugs lately for films, plays and actors, but it seems as if my associations have been incredibly busy lately...

Makes me wonder...Did I do the right thing by leaving the filmmaking world behind?

Here's another one...(I must warn you though...I saw saw Ham's short film, The Anniversary a few years ago as was moved to tears.) --> I had the honor of meeting him a few years ago at a film festival after he won an award for his short.

He is clearly one of the most amazing, least pretentious, and nicest new filmmakers out there. I personally recommend this film, Journey from the Fall wholeheartedly. I guarantee you will be moved by the genius of Ham Tran.

I just finished reading Runawayby Alice Munro.

I admit that this is one of the best collection of short stories I have ever read in my life. And that is kind of saying a lot...because I read A LOT! And yes, I really mean it! Her style of writing is so beautiful, thoughtful and so real. The pacing of her stories is so natural...slow where it should be, and quick in places where I feel like I'd notice how life is just to short in real life. (Read that again, slower...it'll make sense)

I highly recommend this book...perhaps not for men...but definitely for all women...of all ages.

Green Street Hooligans

With nowhere else to go, he flies to the United Kingdom to live with his sister (Claire Forlani and her family. But his subsequent involvement with the local Green Street Elite -- a gang of violent soccer fans -- could change his life forever.

I found this to suprisingly good even though I expected it to be a sad attempt at trying to be a breakout role for Elijah Wood from being your everyday Lord of the Rings Hobbit.

There's so much violence and nonsensical misguided pride and sense of injustice that I found it slightly difficult to wrap my brain around the premise of the "firms". It may just be a cultural thing though...maybe just a testosterone thing...Either way, it's not for everyone, but if you are prepared to see Wood as something other than a Hobbit, this will be a good one.

WHAT'S GOING ON:
We have ALL been affected by the recent "downsizing" at MTV
Networks, whether you like or dislike corporate America,
enjoy pop culture, music, or even watch Asian American
entertainment. If you are an Asian American or care about
Asian American communities then you have been affected
and silenced.

Let us explain:

The entire Asian division of MTV Networks, called MTV World
(MTV DESI--MTV CHI--and MTV K) was axed (2/13/07).  These
small channels were the first place dedicated to creating
positive, realistic, and relevant reflections of Asian
Americans in mainstream media. So, again, the issue here
is bigger than any of our individual opinions regarding
corporate America, pop culture, or MTV for that matter.

By shutting down their Asian American division before it
had a chance to succeed, MTV is sending the message that
Asian American culture is not part of the fabric of America,
that Asian Americans can be brushed away without notice,
and that Asian Americans probably don't care enough for
their collective identity to stand up for their voices.
It's hard to imagine BET or MTV TRES shutting down
because of the respect given to and demanded by those
communitites.  We may be smaller, but we have a
legitimate culture and we contribute to America in
all realms.

Asian Americans will continue to be caricatured,
emasculated, ignored, and stereotyped in American media
if we don't fight for our representation and acknowledgment...
we are more than Apu from the Simpsons and the token
Chinese delivery boy!

The bottom line: the existence of MTV World was making
a difference and we need it to live on.

THE PLIGHT OF OUR ARTISTS:
MTV World brought so many independent artists to the forefront,
many of them artists that other mainstream media may not
have noticed on their own.

To name a few:
Juggy D, DJ Rekha, Kaila Yu, MIA, Jay Chow, Jin the Emcee,
Far East Movement, Maggie Kim, Wong Leehome, Putnam Hall,
Burning Tree Project, Lisa Ray, The Ides, FlowSik, Chee Malabar,
Rain, SE7EN, Bamboo Shoots, Manjit, Adrienne Lau, Sona Family,
Kal Penn, Amerie, King Khan and the BBQ Show, and so many more!

These artists and their peers need a platform.

Synopsis: In the ancient Battle of Thermopylae, King Leonidas and 300 Spartans fought to the death against Xerxes and his massive Persian army. Facing insurmountable odds, their valor and sacrifice inspire all of Greece to unite against their Persian enemy, drawing a line in the sand for democracy.

I really enjoyed this film. Although I was extremely tired and restless last night, the film was engaging and entertaining enough for me to sit through the whole film without even the slightest temptation of nodding off. (Plus, it didn't hurt that there were some incredibly beautiful bodies throughout the entire film.)

Directed by Zack Snyder, who also directed Dawn of the Dead, I felt there was more the flavor of Frank Miller (graphic novel author of 300 and Sin City) than Synder. I felt that I was caught somewhere in the land of animated storyboards. Frame after frame Snyder and DP, Fong brought the graphic novel to life with beautiful angles and lighting. It reminded me a little bit of A-ha's music video "Take on me".

I highly recommend this film...in the theater, and on the biggest screen possible. I might be bias...everyone knows I'm a sucker for period pieces and comic book films.

Word Wars

Synopsis: Follow four "word nerds" through their fastidious preparations and smaller tournaments that lead to the national championship Scrabble tournament in San Diego in 2002. These men are highly motivated (obsessed, even) and are not above uttering a few four-letter words when the going gets tough. Our favorite: Joel Sherman, a true dork with acid reflux trouble (he constantly quaffs Maalox) and no other discernable job besides playing Scrabble.

How can I NOT watch this? I figured that Scrabble is so similiar to Literati that I had to watch it. "Can there really be other word wranglers out there who love word games as much as I?"

The funniest part is that there is such thing as the National Scrabble Association. There is a $25K reward for the one who wins the annual challenge. I LOVE IT! I wonder if I could be a professional Literati player? I wonder if I could live on $25K a year in San Francisco?

I doubt it. Anyway, it's entertaining and interesting to watch these 4 guys go up for the big win!

the wild parrots of telegraph hill

Synopsis: This documentary tells the true story of a Bohemian St. Francis of Assisi and his amazing relationship with a flock of wild parrots. Mark Bittner, a homeless street musician in San Francisco, adopts the flock as he searches for meaning in his life. The weird thing is, he's unaware that the wild parrots will bring him everything he needs. The film celebrates urban wildness (human and avian) and links the parrots' antics to human … antics.

I really enjoyed this documentary. Not even just because I live in San Francisco. It's such a interesting story of Mark and his growing affection for the wild parrots. You know, I feel like such an idiot for not knowing about these parrots. I wonder why I've never heard about them.

My mission this summer will be to go look for them in Telegraph Hill.

The best part of it is...it's really a love story. And I'm a sucker for a good love story. Aren't we all?

Dry Cleaning

Synopsis: For 15 years, Nicole (Miou Miou) and Jean-Marie (Charles Berling) have worked side by side at their dry cleaning establishment, building a business and maintaining a seemingly peaceful marriage. But a chance encounter with Loic (Stanislas Merhar), the male half of a brother-sister nightclub act they catch one night, forces the two to reevaluate their relationship, leading them to wonder whether they ought to be together at all.

I'm not sure how I really feel about this little French film, Dry Cleaning. It's not as clean (haha! Clean, get it? Dry Cleaning? Clean?) as I would like it to be. The story line is a little confusing and seems unrealistic in too many unobvious ways.

Admittedly I got rented it because it says it was "provacative, and sexy!" and indeed it is, but was I expecting too much when I thought it might be the like The Piano Teacher (Unrated Edition). Now, that's a "provacative and sexy!" film.

Okay, so it's up to you. On a scale of 1 - 10, I'd give it a solid 6.

just a question of love

Synopsis: Cyrille Thouvenin stars in this bittersweet tale of a twenty-something man reluctant to come out of the closet. Laurent keeps his homosexuality a secret, but things get complicated when he falls in love with Cedric. Openly gay, Cedric has no problem introducing Laurent as his boyfriend, even to his own mother. But Laurent's need for secrecy forces Cedric to give him an ultimatum: Either Laurent comes out of the closet, or Cedric will leave him.

This is a definite MUST SEE! I loved it! It's so beautiful and complicated. Just like life. So beautiful and complicated.

It's sweet and sour at the same time, and throughout the film I found myself filled with hope.
As engaged as I was in the story I felt myself reflecting on my own life and my own relationship with my own parents, or even my own son.

It's the kind of film that will do that to ya...

Watch it. Love it. Learn from it.

How to be Good

Katie Carr is a good person. She recycles. She's against racism. She's a good doctor, a good mom, a good wife....well, maybe not that last one, considering she's having an affair and has just requested a divorce via cell phone. But who could blame her? For years her husband's been selfish, sarcastic, and underemployed, writing the "Angriest Man in Holloway" column for their local paper.

But now David's changed. He's become a good person, too—really good. He's found a spiritual leader. He has become kind, soft-spoken, and earnest. He's even got a homeless kid set up in the spare room. Katie isn't sure if this is a deeply-felt conversion, a brain tumor—or David's most brilliantly vicious manipulation yet. Because she's finding it more and more difficult to live with David—and with herself.

I find that I'm drawn to non-American authors. It's kind of odd. It's kind of like my taste in films. Foreign. I think that for the most part foreign writers have a different sense of commonality that I find particularly charming.

It's an easy read and if you liked High Fidelity or About a Boy, then I'm pretty sure you'll like this book as well.

I highly recommend it...especially if you want to learn a few things about learning about "How to Be Good".

Also, if you have any recommendations please share. I find it difficult to try to navigate my way around a massive book store trying to find good books to read.

This is such a beautiful film. I LOVED it! I loved it so much that I want to buy the dvd so I can watch it over and over and over again.

I want to watch it when I'm feeling hopeless, or feeling down. I want to watch it when I'm happy or excited about life. I want to watch it when I need to feel inspired or disappointed.

If you haven't seen this yet, you should. And then, you too will want to buy the dvd and watch it over and over and over again.
